Monday, the Roxie has a selection of four recent documentaries from Bay Area women filmmakers, Olas de Recuerdo, a new documentary about young activists in the wake of the 2019 Sudanese revolution and ongoing civil war, Sudan, Remember Us, and Akira Kurosawa's High and Low (repeats Sunday), High Society is at the Lark, Hackers is at the Alamo Drafthouse New Mission (NM), and Clue is at the Alamo Drafthouse Valley Fair (VF) (repeats Tuesday at Drafthouse Mountain View (MV) and Wednesday at MV and NM).

Tuesday, at the Roxie, the San Francisco Film Preserve (the newly-spun-off restoration-focused branch of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, in case you'd missed that) has their first in-person screening to celebrate International Dog Day and present a new restoration of Black Lightning, starring Clara Bow and Thunder the Marvel Dog, with live piano accompaniment by Wayne Barker, as well as Masayuki Suo’s Shall We Dance? (repeats Saturday), the Orinda has a free matinee of Swing Time, Iris is at the Balboa, The Doom Generation is at the Drafthouse VF (repeats Wednesday at the Drafthouse NM), and Bill Paaxton's Frailty (2002) is at the Drafthouse NM.

Wednesday, Georgian director Dea Kulumbegashvili's Cannes Special Jury Prize-winning abortion drama April (repeats Thursdsay) is at the 4 Star (and NB, this may be your only chance to see it in theaters), at BAMPFA, our feature this week, Vive l’amour, begins an already entirely at-rush series of films with director Tsai Ming-liang in person each day through Sunday, the Roxie has a (free, at rush) screenings of The Last Dance (Extended Version), Pee-wee's Big Adventure is at the Balboa, PlayTime (repeats Thursday) is at the Vogue, and newly rediscvoered Australian cult classic Going Down is at the Drafthouse NM.

Thursday, the Stanford's first pair of the week is a Mae West double feature of She Done Him Wrong and I'm No Angel, the Roxie has a reprise of Drugs in the Tenderloin and continues Keanu Summer with Point Break (repeats Saturday), Tsai's pandemic musical The Hole (on 35mm) is at BAMPFA, Taste of Cherry is at the Balboa, Pedro Almodovar's Amores Perros (repeats Sunday) is at the 4 Star, Ninja Scroll is at the New Parkway, and Jaws is at the Drafthouses VS and MV (through Sunday at both).

Friday, SF Cinematheque's annual Crossroads festival begins, presenting 47 works of film, video and performance by 47 artists representing 19 countries and territories presented in 8 curated programs continuing through Sunday, the Roxie opens a newly-struck 35mm print of Frederico Fellini's 8 1/2 (continues through the weekend), writer and director Greg Harrison is in person to present Groove (repeats Saturday with no Q&A) at the Vogue, Andrei Tarkovsky's The Sacrifice and Tsai's What Time Is It There? (on 35mm) are at BAMPFA, Brokeback Mountain (20th Anniversary) (repeats Saturday) is at the Balboa, the Lark has Hong Sang-soo's By the Stream (repeats Sunday), David Fincher's Se7en (repeats Saturday), and kicks off a weekend-long minifest of noir classics with Double Indemnity and The Postman Always Rings Twice, A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) is at all three Drafthouses, and Akira Kurosawa's Ran (repeats Sunday, at VF and MV Saturday) is at the Drafthouse NM, where Mike Nichols's Carnal Knowledge is the first of a Guest Selects series from the directors of Splitsville.

Saturday, a matinee of Robert Altman's McCabe & Mrs. Miller and a Tsai double feature of Goodbye, Dragon Inn and Stray Dogs are at BAMPFA, the Stanford's weekend pairing is a Ronald Colman double feature of Random Harvest and The Prisoner of Zenda, the Roxie has a Fleischer Fairy Tales cartoon matinee, Basement presents a VHS fest of Demons 2. From Beyond, and Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky at the Balboa, the Lark's noir fest continues with The Maltese Falcon and The Big Sleep, and the Splitsville directors' Guest Selects series continues with Get Out Your Handkerchiefs, The Climb, and After Hours plus Casino at the Drafthouse NM.

Sunday, the Roxie screens Sebastian Silva's breakthrough feature La Nana (The Maid) another Tsai double feature of Sand, from the director's Walker series, and his most recent film, Days, is at BAMPFA, The Cotton Club Encore is at the Balboa, a free premiere of the Microcosmos-inspired Mutation of Spirit (with live music and drag show) at the 4 Star, and the Lark's noir fest continues with Laura and Strangers on a Train.
