"In his new anthology book, Across the Movi-verse: Writing on Film 2011–2021, published by The Film Desk, critic J. Hoberman includes an essay titled, “No Success Like Failure: A Natural History of the Film Maudit.” Hoberman describes this odd, persistent category of film thusly: “Cursed with an unhappy destiny, a film maudit may have been ripped untimely from its director’s womb or mutilated by vengeful producers, it is often buried on release and always reviled by critics.” Often, these films are also recouped by critics, maybe a few at first, a little more as the years pass, and then, finally, history has the last laugh. In conjunction with his new book, Hoberman will present Richard Kelly’s multi-verse political comic book saga Southland Tales and Michael Powell’s meta-slasher Peeping Tom, two titles that were loathed upon their respective premieres in 2006 and 1960, but which have benefited considerably from appreciation in the rear-view mirror.
Hoberman will introduce both films and sign copies of his new book following the screening of Southland Tales."–Museum of the Moving Image
