Before best-selling books, hit TV shows, and countless awards would cement him as the voice of a generation, 19-year-old Bourdain spent the summer of 1975 in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Eschewing the conventional cradle-to-grave biopic, Matt Johnson’s Tony focuses on these pivotal months in 1975, illuminating the relationships, ambitions, and contradictions that distinguished this formative chapter as one that would shape the rest of Anthony Bourdain’s life.
Ahead of its theatrical release on August 7, Museum of the Moving Image is proud to present the very first screening of Matt Johnson’s Tony in Queens, the borough Bourdain championed as “an enchanted wonderland, an international crossroads, a stewpot of neighborhoods filled with the languages, cultures, traditions, and flavors of many lands.” The advanced screening of Tony will be preceded by a pair of food-centric films praised by Anthony Bourdain himself: Brad Bird and Jan Pinkava’s Ratatouille and Juzo Itami’s Tampopo."–Museum of the Moving Image
