MARLENE DIETRICH X2

Series Site

Chanteuse and actress, archetypal German and ardent American antifascist, brooding sex symbol and willful camp icon, a paragon of feminine glamor who was as comfortable in top hat and tails or gorilla suit as in a ballgown—come fall in love again with Marlene Dietrich, a figure whose complex, bi-amorous screen persona contained multitudes. In our pairing of Josef von Sternberg’s The Blue Angel and Alfred Hitchcock’s Stage Fright you can catch La Dietrich as a sultry Berlin cabaret singer/seductress still in her baby fat and, for Hitch, in her fully mature diva form as an ostentatious star of the London theater. Released 20 years apart, seeing these two films together is undeniable proof that the essence of Dietrich is eternal, immortal.

A companion piece to International Center of Photography’s (ICP) exhibition “Play the Part: Marlene Dietrich” featuring nearly 200 photographs taken from 1906 to 1978, Play the Part: Marlene Dietrich examines the multifaceted evolution of Dietrich’s (1901–1992) public persona.

About the International Center of Photography
The International Center of Photography (ICP) is the world’s leading institution dedicated to photography and visual culture. Cornell Capa founded ICP in 1974 to champion “concerned photography”—socially and politically minded images that can educate and change the world. Through exhibitions, education programs, community outreach, and public programs, ICP offers an open forum for dialogue about the power of the image. Since its inception, ICP has presented more than 700 exhibitions, provided thousands of classes, and hosted a wide variety of public programs. ICP launched its new integrated center on Manhattan’s Lower East Side in January 2020.
