Happy Birthday, Toni! A Celebration of Black Women

Series Site

“I first encountered Toni Morrison in the storage closet of my high school English department. I’d never been in that room before, and don’t remember why I was at that time, but my life changed that day when I pulled dusty copies of The Bluest Eye and Sula from the storage room shelf. I wasn’t ready for Toni then, her complex writing was a challenge and a gift, because within those pages I found myself—who I was then and who I would become. When Ms. Morrison passed, many Black women mourned the loss of not just a phenomenal writer, but of a sister, a friend, our truth-teller. So, on what would’ve been her 89th birthday, Coco Killingsworth, BAM’s Vice President of Education and Community Engagement, and I invited a few women to celebrate her life and work and the gift she gave all of us—the validation of our right to live in this world unapologetically.” —Gina Duncan, Vice President of Film and Strategic Programming
