When Issa Rae said “congratulations to those men” after announcing the all-male 2020 Academy nominations for Best Director, she cleverly acknowledged the imbalance of representation in major award shows. Not seeing women or people of color reflected in what gets recognized is inexcusable and no more so than this year with films like the ones we’re presenting: Céline Sciamma’s PORTRAIT OF A LADY OF FIRE, Lulu Wang’s THE FAREWELL, Chinonye Chukwu’s CLEMENCY, Lorene Scafaria’s HUSTLERS and Nia DaCosta’s LITTLE WOODS.
All film screenings will be introduced by Anne Cohen, Senior Entertainment Writer & Film Critic at Refinery29. A portion of ticket sales will go towards The Future of Film is Female, a funding organization that supports women directed short films.
