All summer long, Nitehawk traces the beginnings of the classic Midnight Movie and positions a new crop of films as the next “Midnite” generation.
Born in canvas carnival tents and the independant roadshow circuit of the 20th century, the Midnight Movie flourished once it found a permanent home in downtown New York City. The combination of brave filmmakers, a group of theaters (The Elgin, St Marks, The Waverly, 8th Street Playhouse), and a daring audience came together to create this completely new form of movie-going. Eventually, this movement spread nationwide and inspired the next wave of late-nite auteurs who continue to defy convention.
This twenty film series celebrates the older classics and considers new ones because the Midnight Movie isn’t just a film to watch but a shared experience that should continue to flourish in the cinema.
