Striking: Women Editors, Cinematographers, Writers and Composers in Film at Nitehawk Cinema

Series Site

At both Nitehawk locations this March, you can see your favorite films – classics, genre staples, and indie favorites – that just so happen to have been made with women behind the camera. We’re focusing on a selection of brilliant editors, composers, cinematographers, and writers, to celebrate the (often unknown) contributions by women to cinema while also highlighting the need for increasing gender parity in these roles. According to the Annenberg Initiative, the Top 500 grossing films in 2018 included the following: Writers (19%), Composers (2.75%), Editors (23%), and Cinematographers (6%). This needs to change and, after seeing this series, you’ll be reminded why.

At Nitehawk Williamsburg: ALL ABOUT EVE – Barbara McLean (Editor). TRON – Wendy Carlos Williams (Composer). THE FITS – Saela Davis (Editor). ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND – Ellen Kuras (Cinematographer). SIGHTSEERS – Amy Jump (Writer & Editor). LEGEND OF HILL HOUSE – Delia Derbyshire (Composer. HOLY MOTORS – Caroline Champetier (Cinematographer). GREEN ROOM – Julia Bloch (Editor).

At Nitehawk Prospect Park: REBECCA – Joan Harrison (Co-Writer). MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS – Anne V. Coates (Editor). THE FOG – Debra Hill (Writer). THE SECRET GARDEN – Caroline Thompson (Editor) and Isabelle Lorente (Writer). RAGING BULL – Thelma Schoonmaker (Editor). EVE’S BAYOU – Terilyn A. Shropshire (Editor). TOO WONG FOO, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING! JULIE NEWMAR – Rachel Portman (Composer).
