Breaking with an 80-plus-year tradition of ticketed screenings in MoMA’s theaters, Open Door Fridays gives visitors unlimited, all-day access to specially selected film programs that will run continuously during Museum hours. The Department of Film celebrates the Museum’s 2019 reopening by offering a taste of a moviegoing experience that was commonly enjoyed by audiences from the early silent period through the 1960s: Every Friday, you are encouraged to drop in to the theater at any point and stay as long as you like to enjoy audience favorites and hidden gems from MoMA’s collection—with no tickets required!

  • The 1982–83 Manhattan Cable public-access show Your Program of Programs, ceated and hosted by Lithuanian American theater artist Kestutis Nakas, captures the interdisciplinary artistic mindset of Club 57 and the East Village of the 1970s and 1980s. Staged weekly at the Experimental Television Center, YPOP joined Glenn O’Brien’s TV Party and Colab-produced programs in New York’s rich post-punk artists’ television scene. As a host, Nakas riffed on the early TV work of Ernie Kovacs and Sid Caesar while flaunting the tatty, precarious nature of his show’s production in a theatrical impulse rooted in Brecht and Dada. For this full-day marathon, we’ve gathered a selection of episodes featuring Kenny Scharf, Ann Magnuson, Glenn O’Brien, John Sex and Alexis Del Lago, Merle Ginsberg, Ilona Granet, Tseng Kwong Chi, Tom Rubnitz, Stuart Sherman, Rhys Chatham, and more.

The Circulating Film Library has long included and fostered the work of women filmmakers. Among these creators, those who produced animated works represent a special group, whether they tell a traditional tales with realistic drawings or focus on a minute of sunshine through collages of several mediums. Several of the works in this program are MoMA preservations.
