The Fall 2018 edition of our ongoing “Waverly Midnights” series presents 12 widescreen wonders from the legendary Hong Kong studio, in late-night screenings on Fridays and Saturdays, October 12-December 29.
The series is co-programmed by film critic Simon Abrams, who notes “The Shaw Brothers studio may understandably be synonymous with martial arts essentials like COME DRINK WITH ME (our Thanksgiving weekend offering, playing November 21-24) and FIVE DEADLY VENOMS (December 7-8). But producers Mona Fong and the Shaws (Run Run, Runme, Runje, and Runde) catered to/exploited all genres and tastes, including musicals and horror films. For this program, we’ve singled out a dozen titles that show off the studio’s range, including the gonzo King Kong ripoff MIGHTY PEKING MAN (which opens the program October 12-13, while the Kong musical is in previews on Broadway), the glorious superhero tokusatsu adventure THE SUPER INFRAMAN (November 30-December 1), and the steamy lesbian period melodrama INTIMATE CONFESSIONS OF A CHINESE COURTESAN (November 2-3). All titles are presented in glorious Shaw-Scope, as they were meant to be seen.”
