Featured Screening: The Incredible Shrinking Man at BAMcinématek
Today BAMcinématek observes new additions to the National Film Registry with a pair of screenings including a shorts program and science fiction gem The Incredible Shrinking Man. On hand to introduce both screenings is Daniel Eagan, author of America’s Film Legacy 2009-2010: A Viewer’s Guide to the 50 Landmark Movies added to the National Film Registry in 2009-10.
Added to the Registry in 2009, The Incredible Shrinking Man represents one of the early screen credits of SF/horror writer Richard Matheson, who shortly went on to become one of The Twilight Zone‘s strongest writers. This tale of a man whose contact with radiation continuously dwarfs him, sending him on a dark, picaresque journey, has been acclaimed by J. Hoberman as “a masterpiece of vulgar existentialism.” This places it squarely in line with other work by director Jack Arnold, one of the most reliable B-movie auteurs best known for Creature from the Black Lagoon and It Came from Outer Space and also of the unsettling, existential western No Name on the Bullet. This is one of his best and well worth the chance to view on the big screen, on which it’s protagonist is ultimately reduced to almost man-size.
The Incredible Shrinking Man plays at 6:50 and is followed by a shorts program featuring work by Helen Hill, Peter Hutton, Jane Geiser and more at 9:15.
